I use - and love - Wordpress. I haven't tried Typepad, though, so I can't compare.
Love the FOs!

I used Wordpress for two years, hosting it on my own domain.
Wordpress is very nice blogging platform. I still like the features more than those of Typepad, mostly because some things are made a lot simpler and you have more control over your blog. For example, it’s easier to add link to your blog sidebar through “Links” section, but with Typepad you must use Typelist-feature which is divided to different subsections depending on link type.
The problem with Wordpress is that new versions are not very stable. If something goes wrong, there is nobody who can help you. I upgraded my version two times during two years, and both times I lost all my archives even though I made backup copies!
Reason for this was the same both times. If you cannot get WP admin screen open, there is nothing you can do. The program does not have “back doors”. My backups were taken from MySQL-table and therefore all information is there, but in a format which cannot be transformed to my Typepad blog or anywhere else because I cannot open my Wordpress. I could look up all my posts there and cut & copy & repost everything manually, but I feel it’s too much work to go through 2 years of archives that way, and my pictures are lost anyway.
WP is free program and therefore users cannot rely on technical support. There are support forums but I didn’t get any help there. It seems that I was not the only one whose blog crashed beyond repair when upgrading to latest version. Getting help there depends on if someone out there is interested enough to help you. Main reason why I chose Typepad is that if I get a problem, I want to know there is someone who has to solve it, because I pay him to do so.
Don’t get me wrong. WP is a fine blogging platform, and I use it still for my second blog. But if you decide to choose it, you have to know there are no back doors if you cannot get to admin screen. Simply copying every post on Word file would be better backup than fiddling with MySql.
My second blog has functioned perfectly for two years because I never tried to upgrade the program. I don’t post there often enough to need new features.

Deb,
Being a relatively new blogger, perhaps my opinion is too untried to be much help. But I use Blogger and have had no troubles at all. The help desk/forums have been great. And since it is Google related, there is always extra help at Google. Things seem to be easy to use at Blogger - links, pics etc. You can future date posts - a great feature if you travel at all.
Hope this helps.

I am on WordPress and have been since I started blogging (March07). I am self-hosted and have had problems only once, and that was caused by a plug-in.
I haven't had any problems with any of the updates. But then, I don't use any of the automated update systems, preferring to manually do it myself. I find that spending a few minutes is well worth it.
I am obsessive about backups - downloads and exporting everything on a regular basis.
Any of the blogging platforms can eat whatever they feel.
I don't know about typepad - but there are a couple of good WordPress Forums on Ravelry

Hi Deb!
Your blog is great! We use wordpress, and we've had a good experience, so far. There was one day, when I posted something, and all of a sudden, everything "auto reformatted!" Our whole blog looked all messed up. Brendan is the techie guy in our house, so he fixed it by doing a little geek work, but he couldn't figure out why it had happened. So he send an email to wordpress support and had an answer back in less than two hours (with assurances that it wouldn't happen again). My problem with technology, is that I use it all the time without knowing how it works (because I don't really care--I don't need to, Brendan does!) Anyway, I don't know if that's even remotely helpful. Happy knitting--and blogging!
Take care,
Kelly :)
